All this and other question will be answered below.

Visa vs TRP. For receiving legal status in Ukraine you as a foreigner need to get a temporary residence permit (TRP).

TRP card is issued by the migration service of Ukraine. But you can apply for the TRP only after arrival to Ukraine. And most important is that you need to enter Ukraine only on the basis of long term immigration visa — type D visa.

The first step is getting visa type D in the Ukrainian embassy. The list of embassy missions of Ukraine in all countries you can find here. For all types of visas to Ukraine you need to submit the following documents:

  • passport (valid for at least three months after the stated date of departure from Ukraine; have at least two blank pages; have a validity period of no longer than 10 years);
  • copies of all pages of the applicant`s valid passport that contain any information such as passport data, residence address, data of the parents and spouses, visas and entry/exit stamps;
  • duly filled and signed visa application form. This form you can prepare at the visa application form;
  • one colored photo 35 mm x 45 mm attached to the visa application form;
  • valid health insurance (original and copy) with coverage of at least 30,000 EUR or equivalent in other currency, unless otherwise stipulated by legislation or international treaties of Ukraine;
  • payment slip for a consular fee, unless otherwise stipulated by legislation or international treaties of Ukraine;
  • bank statement for the last six months certified by the issuing bank, confirming sufficient funds for the period of intended stay in Ukraine.

Вut since you need to get a long-term visa for the immigration purpose and getting temporary residence card you should prove for the embassy that you really need a long-term residential (immigration) visa. At this point, you have different options:

  • set up your own company and get a 3-years work permit as a director of the company to be;
  • find a job and ask your employer to get a 1–3-year work permit for you;
  • enter University of Ukraine and get a 1-year permit;
  • get a volunteer invitation from authorised by the government organisation and receive a 1-year permit.

The volunteer invitation is the easiest one and the less expensive way to get a long term 90 days type-D visa to Ukraine and 1-year temporary residence permit on the same basis.

You should be aware of the following:

  • only authorised by the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers organisation can issue an invitation for foreign volunteers;
  • the list of the organisations can be found here;
  • you need to have an original of the invitation from the inviting organisation and proves that this organisation is included in the list of the authorised organisations;
  • regardless of having valid grounds for getting visa D-10 you still can be denied in visa because of a number of reasons.

After receiving all document from the inviting organisation and collecting other necessary documents (bank statement, international medical insurance, etc) you need to submit the documents to the embassy of Ukraine. Sometimes, depending on the country you will be invited to the interview, sometimes just will get the visa stamp at your passport. Time for issuing a visa is also different from state to state. Usually, it varies from 1–2 days to 1 month. Usually, you will get a visa for a 90 days period.

The second step is the application for a temporary residence permit. Before entering Ukraine you need to book the place of your stay. Important to have a written agreement with the landlord. This address can be verified by the migration service officials in the process of your TRP application processing.

After crossing of Ukrainian border you need to get a notary translation of your passport with the visa D-10 page and stamp of border guard service. For residence permit, you shall also need to submit:

  • the official written obligation of the inviting organisation;
  • invitation from the inviting organisation and proves that this organisation is included in the list of the authorised organisations;
  • Ukrainian medical insurance (the one you had for the visa doesn’t work for this purpose).

The process of verification of the data stated in your application can be last for up to 15 working days and you can track the stages here. You will get a 1-year residence permit.

The third and final stage is getting of “propiska” — registration of your personal address. Within the 30 days after issuing the temporary residence card you are obliged to register the place of your living. For this, you need to visit local self-government authority with the landlord and written rent agreement.

It is important to live at the address you will be registered in since sometimes migration service may verify this information and check this. Before the expiration of the 1-year term, you can ask for the renewal of your TRP card.

Legal stay in Ukraine allows you to stay or leave Ukraine any amount of times in the 1-year period without any visas. You are also allowed to find a job and get a work permit and change the residence cards for a new on the basis of issued work permit.
